When Melody Stein was turned away from a culinary academy for being deaf, she responded by mastering the art of Neapolitan pizzeria and opening her own restaurant, Mozzeria. With the help of her husband and co-owner, Russ Stein, the deaf duo run the restaurant with an entirely deaf staff. This is significant because according to the National Deaf Center only 48 percent of the deaf population are employed, compared with 72 percent of the hearing population. At Mozzeria, customers place their orders by signing, pointing, or writing their order. Melody and her staff know the community loves the food by the smiles on their faces!
