It’s Pride Month, and we’re excited to be collaborating with WeWork Seattle on a Small Business. Big Pride. Instagram Contest!

From June 17th-30th, enter to win (contest instructions below) fabulous prizes from local LGBTQ-owned businesses like Terra Plata, Century Ballroom, Stoup Brewing, and Broadcast Coffee. In addition, we’re partnering with allies like pastry chef, Natalie Popkave.

Natalie Popkave

We asked Natalie for her perspective on allyship, and she had this to share:

“I struggle to define what it means to me to be an ally of the LGBTQ+ community because I feel that I have no authority on the matter. As a cisgendered heterosexual white woman, I’m conscious of my privilege and I recognize that I cannot self-identify as an ally. I am welcoming and compassionate to folks of all walks of life, however I do not claim to know what it is like to be scoffed at, to be denied respect, to be marginalized, merely for being myself.

I will listen to your stories, learn from your experiences, and work to gain understanding of your struggles and triumphs. I will stand up for you when you need a voice. I will stand behind you when you need support.

The best that I can say as I attempt to be an ally, is simply, that I am here for you.”

Allyship is about awareness, understanding, and action. We are incredibly appreciative that we have the opportunity to meet so many incredible small business owners, and we aim to help folks show up for small businesses and diverse communities by making it easier for all of us to #SpendLikeItMatters.
