As a business owner, what’s the strangest or craziest idea you’ve ever tried?
The craziest idea I’ve ever tried was deciding to open up a gym post-pandemic. When I told people I was opening a gym, I received all types of unsolicited advice from folks about opening up a gym in such a sensitive climate. Fortunately for me, I had a gut feeling that people would be screen fatigued and just ready to get back in shape. After vaccines were widely distributed, I continued with my plans and have been moving forward ever since.
What’s something your customers may not know about you or your business?
Some people may not know that my father helped me renovate the building for my business as the lead contractor. I told him my vision and he executed the plan precisely. It was such a great experience to see my vision come to life, with the help of my dad every step of the way. With my family’s name on the building, I feel like I get to pay homage to everyone who paved the way for me.
What are some of your favorite local businesses and why?
Refresh House Juice Bar- they offer fresh pressed juice and delicious smoothies.
Fit Bar (Renton)- Great holistic juice bar to hang out at
4th and Morris Dentistry– POC/women-owned dentist! Very professional
Anything else you’d like us to know about you and your business?
I really love what I do! I dreamed of owning my own gym for a very long time, and I am finally living out my dream and purpose. My desire was to always provide a space for black and brown folks to not only work out but have a safe space for them to decompress from the outside world, and to now be in the position to do that is truly rewarding in itself. I also love that I get to see youngins grow up in this space where we normalize being active and healthy as a lifestyle. Wellness Gaines is far from just a job to me. I see it more as a ministry. I get the opportunity to make a great impact and help influence others to be the best versions of themselves, and that is something I cherish and will never take for granted.
