King’s Books

Since 2000, King’s Books has provided the community of Tacoma with a place to purchase both new and used books. Over the years King’s has become a place for artists to showcase their work, and serves as a space for the community to come together. In addition, King’s Books facilitates a variety of book clubs, including one for trans youth. Originally founded by John Schoppert and Pat McDermott, sweet pea Flaherty has been at the helm since 2010.  A longtime bookseller throughout the Midwest, sweet pea now resides in Tacoma. 

Fun fact: sweet pea Flaherty’s cats have been a consistent presence at King’s Books. The current dapper shop cat in residence is Herbert, who joined the staff in 2015.
