Sankaku onigiri cafe & bar
Rie Otsuka started Sankaku onigiri cafe & bar as a pop-up in 2019. In 2022 she opened her brick and mortar in Melrose Market. The small cafe offers homestyle onigiri with filling dispersed throughout the rice ball — unlike traditional onigiri with the filling compacted in the center. Customers rave about Rie’s onigiri fillings, including the ume konbu (salty pickled plum with konbu) and tuna mayo. Rie also sells savory sides like sesame cucumber and has an expanding drink menu.
Fun fact: Sankaku translates to “triangle” which refers to the triangle shaped onigiri Rie’s mom made.Â
