Meet Milen Gebreselassie, the owner of Kaffa Coffee & Wine Bar in Seattle’s Rainier Beach neighborhood. Milen’s business is named after the Kaffa region in Ethiopia, which is recognized as the birthplace of coffee. In addition to Ethiopian coffee ceremonies, Milen also offers a wonderful selection of wine and Ethiopian cuisine.

What’s your favorite part about the neighborhood/community your business is in and why?
We love the Rainier Beach [neighborhood because] it’s very diverse and makes us feel at home. People here genuinely love the neighborhood with all its imperfections.
Why is it important to you and your business that people #SpendLikeItMatters?
Small businesses foster community. They create meaningful jobs and help money stay in the local community.

Beach Bakery is one of our favorites, which is owned by Amy [O’Connell].
