Tefera Zewdie left Ethiopia as a teenager and moved to Washington, DC. Later in life he wanted to create a place that brought Ethiopian people together and felt more like being back in the East African country he grew up in. In 2005 Zewdie decided to open Dukem Ethiopian along the 1900 block of Ninth Street, a Washington region that has the world’s biggest Ethiopian community outside of Africa. It has been a community staple ever since.

Dukem offers large portioned plates, friendly staff, and low prices for delicious authentic Ethiopian food. Be sure to check out their Maryland location as well!

Bonus: Dukem also offers Ethiopian spices, breads and more in their market.
