In 1990, Richard “Dickie” Shannon opened the first Horace and Dickie’s in a small blue-and-white building just big enough to handle carryout. This location drew lines of hungry patrons for three decades solidifying Horace and Dickie’s place in dishes that shaped how D.C. eats, according to the Washington Post

In 2022, Shannon passed away but his daughter has continued the legacy of serving the local favorite, fried whiting, with sides of baked mac and cheese, collard greens, potato salad, candied yams, french fries, hush puppies, coleslaw, corn cobs, or seasoned potatoes.
