After moving from Mexico to Portland in the early 2000s, Patricia Cabrera discovered there was one thing she really missed: the food. When she went looking for her favorite dishes she found only Anglicized versions that didn’t quite hit the spot. So in 2002, she left her job as the Director of a preschool and started her restaurant La Calaca Comelona,  dedicated to serving authentic Mexican food.

La Calaca Comelona translates to “The Hungry Skeleton,” hence the restaurant’s colorful skeletal decor inspired by Día de los Muertos. Enjoy your meal outside on their lush garden patio. If you’re vegan or vegetarian, you can order your burrito or sarape with soyrizo or smoky grilled cactus.

Bonus: Pick up a bottle of their handcrafted salsa made with traditional chiles from Mexico!
