Tyrone White wanted to build a business that brought second chances and inspiration to underprivileged communities. In 2017, he purchased MLK Deli where he now hires men from his community and can be an example of a thriving enterprise in Ward 7 where he was raised, and Ward 8 where he lives now.

The MLK Deli walls are covered in paintings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the late D.C. Mayor and Ward 8 Council member Marion S. Barry, Malcolm X, former President Barack Obama, and other historically significant Black figures. The meals focus on D.C. icons and landmarks like the local favorite the “Big Chair Beef Reuben,” the “John Wall Ham Sandwich,” and the “Mr. Lucas Fried Chicken,” named for Gregory Lucas, MLK Deli’s original owner.

The crab cakes are mouthwatering masterpieces according to MLK regulars. Stop by and see for yourself!

Check out their other location: Deanwood Deli.
