Founded in 2011 by Okumu Mukanda, Portland Ave Hair and Beauty Supply’s motto is, “A good hair day is the beginning of a great day!” Okumu came to the United States from Africa with a dream and only $500 to her name and wanted to prove that the American dream is achievable with hard work, perseverance, and determination. Her business is dedicated to all the dreamers, and welcomes everyone, regardless of age, gender, or nationality.

The shop offers a diverse range of affordable products and services. They prioritize creating a welcoming shopping experience where every customer feels like a part of their extended family. The business was established to meet the hair product needs of the Black community and grew to provide products and services to cater to customers of all ethnic backgrounds.
