The District Fishwife, nestled in Union Market, is Northeast D.C.’s first sustainable seafood market. The business was founded in 2013 by partners Fiona Lewis and Ben Friedman, whose shared love for the ocean brought them together. Both Fiona and Ben have extensive experience working in ocean conservation and sustainability, working to ensure the long-term health and well-being of our oceans.

Their store is dedicated to providing fresh, seasonal seafood along with a range of ready-made packaged foods like seaweed salad, tobiko (flying fish roe), and house-made sauces. If you’re looking for a quick bite to eat, head to their take-away counter serving global offerings like fish and chips, poke bowls, and seafood tacos that pair perfectly with their selection of wines and on-tap beers.

Bonus: Looking for something special? The District Fishwife stocks many hard-to-find specialty seafood items like barramundi, sheepshead, sea urchin, and more.
