Black History Month 2023
Artwork by Damon Brown.

For Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., racial justice and economic justice went hand in hand. We believe that Black History Month 2023 is a time for reflection, celebration, and action.

We worked with Seattle-based artist Damon Brown to create Intentionalist’s Black History Month art and asked him to take inspiration from the theme of economic justice.

“This art piece represents the dichotomy between big businesses and small, diverse businesses. The background is dominated by monochromatic, imposing structures symbolizing big business, while the foreground is filled with vibrant and colorful shapes, representing the diverse small businesses in our communities. This piece reminds us of our choices’ power in supporting local and diverse economies. By supporting small businesses with our spending, we can aid in their economic recovery and contribute to the sustainability of our communities.”

Black-owned small businesses are community hubs where people come together and lift up one another, whether to celebrate, organize, or simply connect in a safe and inclusive space.
